1. The Lake Of 31 Miles
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
Composer's Note: I wrote this song while on a break with friends in a cabin in Quebec, Canada. I drove up from Brockville through Ottawa. The song lyric has pretty much all the details to navigate to there.
Took the 105 north out of Ottawa to Maniwaki
Turned off at Bouchette then left over le pont
Lingered a while watching the Gatineau flow
Wondering 'where does it go?'
Cruising and taking it slow ..
.. here out in Quebec and I've no fear
Smiling, not even a small tear
here where creation is strong
harmony holding the song
everyone singing along
Moving on slow through dusty roads weaving and winding
Heading across to "The lake of thirty-one miles"
Sun going down - finally reaching the end
Smiling I'm greeted by friends
Looks like it's gonna be slow ..
.. here out in Quebec and I've no fear
Smiling, not even a small tear
here where creation is strong
harmony holding the song
everyone singing along
Loon on the lake - Allan and Michael are swimming
Bethel and Vaughan are finishing reading their books
Linda and Gwen are winning each other at word games
We're here in the wild but it's so tame
Everyone's taking it slow ..
.. here out in Quebec and I've no fear
Smiling, not even a small tear
here where creation is strong
harmony holding the song
everyone singing along
Content 'round the fire on the shore you can hear the lake lapping
singing our songs as we muse with the starry stars looking on.
Mike makes us laugh with his line in the alphabet game
for this joy and this moment we came
And dancing the fireflies glow ..
.. here out in Quebec and we've no fear
Smiling, not even a small tear
here where creation is strong
harmony holding the song
everyone singing along
2. I Would Have Given It All
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
Just couldn't stop thinkin' then – it doesn't seem right
With you there and me here alone in the night.
I felt I should be there – I should hold you tight
Just walk and talk into the daylight.
And now it's only fair that you should know … I would have given it all.
I would have given you everything
(all that you wanted – more than you needed)
Even more than gold and diamond rings
(all that you wanted or needed)
I would have given you all my love
(all that you wanted – more than you needed)
We could have shared the stars above
(all that you wanted or needed)
Even so y'know, I'm glad you came. Nobody's wrong or right – no one's to blame
You can't love me that way 'though – it's such a shame.
It only works if you feel the same.
And now it's only fair that you should know … I would have given it all
I would have given you everything
(all that you wanted – more than you needed)
Even more than gold and diamond rings
(all that you wanted or needed)
I would have given you all my love
(all that you wanted – more than you needed)
We could have shared the stars above
(all that you wanted or needed)
On my love – you could float – and just sail away – I would have given it all
I would have given you everything
(all that you wanted – more than you needed)
Even more than gold and diamond rings
(all that you wanted or needed)
Seasons turn and there may come a day – maybe for someone else you'll feel this way
Then you may understand the things I say – You'll want to give them love always.
And when you feel that way you'll surely know - I would have given it all
I would have given you everything
(all that you wanted – more than you needed)
Even more than gold and diamond rings
(all that you wanted or needed)
I would have helped you live all your dreams
(all that you wanted – more than you needed)
Made your life golden – more than sunlight beams
(all that you wanted or needed)
I would have learned to sing all your songs
(all that you wanted – more than you needed)
And sing and serenade all night long
(all that you wanted or needed)
I only lived to make your life shine
(all that you wanted – more than you needed)
I only wished you wanted to be mine but that was more than you wanted or needed!
3. Faithful Music
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
Composer's Note: Whatever our mood or circumstance, music can be like a loyal and faithful friend who laughs or cries with us or console us when needed.
If your heart is starving or at a banquet all the time
Where love supplies the food and music is the wine
Alone then - turned inside out - feel you want to hide
That's when the music's by your side
That's when the music's by your side
When every break's a fracture and even sun brings rain
The light down at the end is a fast approaching train
When they're gone - there's no love left - your heart needs time to mend.
That's when the music is your friend
That's when the music is your friend
Yeah Just like a friend - always understands
Smiles along then sad when you're blue
Even at the end - who is left to stand?
Faithful music still shines through for you.
When their hot love boils over - evaporates like steam
Left to live the nightmare instead of all your dreams
Still here to rock you gently - soothing you to sleep
That's when the music lets you weep.
That's when the music lets you weep.
When every break's a fracture and even sun brings rain
The light down at the end is a fast approaching train
When they're gone - there's no love left - your heart needs time to mend.
Why not let the music is your friend
Yeah for now just let the music is your friend
4. On The Inside
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
See the man with the chequered flag waving to-and-fro – moral man is lagging behind (behind)
Near the finish the bomb is winning – love steps aside or is crushed with national pride (with pride)
Humans are losing the human race now – so many have already lost
So many lives empty, wasted somehow – nobody wants to count the cost.
Then (as if in parenthesis) see the beaming light in the genesis of a love (a love)
Microscopic to humankind but then they don’t really expect to find it above (above)
Nobody’s thinking of tomorrow now – Can we be sure of today?
Building war towers where men used to plough and rain washing all the soil away
Oh oh oh outside it appears to be something but what a mess – on the inside!
This system appears to stand so tall but see it crawl – on the inside!
We must change not just appearance but the man we are – on the inside!
I must change not just the words I say but all my thoughts – on the inside!
(sing verse and refrain in counterpoint)
On the inside – on the inside – on the inside!
5. I Want A Real Moon
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
Composer's Note: I heard it said once that moths normally navigate using the moon as a guide. When they come across an artificial light source in the dark it throws them off course and they end up continually burning themselves on the light. Meanwhile they fail to get where they want to go. I couldn't help but feel this was a good analogy of humans (well OK me :-) trying to navigate through life without a true source of reference. We can't rely on our own understanding as so often this has been made slightly askew from our upbringing or bad experiences. Really, we are only going to hurt ourselves by trying to navigate through life without a true reference to keep us set on the right course. Be it from a close friend, or the Bible or whatever, we all need readjustment from time to time from a TRUE source.
Just like a moth around a flame at night, I was absolutely wrong
And I was dying in the process while I wrote it down in song
Still I'd keep coming back for the burning - if I didn't wake real soon
And learn to navigate, it's gonna take a real moon
I wanna real moon. I wanna real moon
If it's not too late to navigate I wanna real moon
We had a talk about our feelings - She was absolutely right
And soon the time had slipped away and so her day became our night
Upon the rocks a ship can be wrecked - and then your heart can be marooned
Unless within your sight is the guiding light of a real moon.
I wanna real moon. I wanna real moon
If it's not too late to navigate I wanna real moon
'just take the good and then forget about the bad'
You'll be far more sane to know that everyone is mad!
I wanna ask someone directions - just to be absolutely sure
Or at least relieve the symptoms if for now there is no cure
And if it's true no man's an island - well then I've run too far too soon
No artificial light can guide me right - I need a real moon.
I wanna real moon. I wanna real moon
If it's not too late to navigate I wanna real moon
I wanna real moon. I wanna real moon
If it's not too late to navigate I wanna real moon
6. Guard Your Heart
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
Composer's Note: A knife can be used by an enemy to stab you or by a surgeon to save you. So in truth whether you have the tools or not to kill it is really the intentions, the motivations, that bring about killing or war. These stem from the heart and therefore 'above all things' we should 'guard our heart'. Certainly, given mankind's propensity for anger and violence, some would say that having easy access to weapons is perhaps not the wisest situation to put yourself in.
It was a cool sharp blade that cut him through - seems he didn't have a chance mmmmm
No more party days or sunshine rays or nights out at the dance mmmmmm
With skill the knife was wielded with a calculated thrust
So down the victim fell with all his future in the dust
While it seems at first the sharpened knife blood spills
It's not the weapon in the hand but the broken heart that kills.
It's not the weapon in the hand but the broken heart that kills.
It was a cool sharp blade that cut him through - some say he didn't have a chance mmmmm
Yet friends and loved ones prayed that God would save him with this lance mmmmmm
With skill the knife was wielded with determined will precise
So snatched out of the grave he rose and paid the surgeon's price.
While it seems at first the sharpened knife blood spills
It's not the weapon in the hand but the broken heart that kills.
Take away the guns and bombs and even knives but still
Sickened hearts would then resort to bare hands to kill
But take away the sickness, hate and all the prejudice disarm
If hearts are filled with love they cannot motivate to harm.
While it seems at first the sharpened knife blood spills
It's not the weapon in the hand but the broken heart that kills.
It's not the weapon in the hand but the broken heart that kills.
7. Reaching Out For A Hand
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
Unsteady baby walks. She reaches for a hand.
She's feeling more secure now someone's holding on - holding on.
And no one likes to fall - or even feel the fear
But if you reach for me there I'll be holding on - holding on.
Our life is full of times uncertain as the wind blows
We have to grasp the nettle - live life before it goes from our hand.
It safer not to walk and safer not to choose
But then you're left behind with no one holding on - holding on
So take some baby steps and face up to your fear
Right here until you do I will be holding on - holding on.
Our life is full of dreams and hopes for our tomorrow
We have to grasp the nettle - live life before it goes from our hand.
Reaching out for a hand
I'd like to quench your fear - But have some of my own
If I tried to leave, I'd like to think you would be holding on - holding on.
Choose life - choose joy - take some steps and move on
Reaching out for a hand. (repeat and fade)
8. Sunshine And Hope
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
Composer's Note: What is it about the sun that makes people feel good? Could it be that even at a subconscious level we feel that whoever could make such a marvellous spectacle, with all his power and wisdom, must surely be able to offer us hope for the future. Whatever the case, I certainly feel better on a sunny day and the marvellous spectacle of such a heavenly body always takes me out of my own puny world and it reminds me that someone with immense power and wisdom will surely not leave us on our own.
I just love that in the evening in the summertime
You can wait 'til past eleven just to watch the sun go down
Then as if the hand of God Himself would paint the sky
See the fiery flames around it - as it melts on the horizon
And welcomes all the stars
From the early morning to the shiny moon
Daybreak and daylight give peace and hope
On the waves of wheat - Yeah on the shiny sea
Sunshine and God's rays will help me cope.
I just love that in the morning in the summertime
It's so early when the sun awakes to warm the window pane
and there's something 'bout the joy up in that clear blue sky
Makes it easy to imagine all of mankind's wounds will vanish.
There'll be a healing of the scars
From the early morning to the shiny moon
Daybreak and daylight give peace and hope
On the waves of wheat - Yeah on the shiny sea
Sunshine and God's rays will help me cope.
Gonna take some time just to enjoy the sky.
Every sunny hour fills me more with power.
From the early morning to the shiny moon
Daybreak and daylight give peace and hope
On the waves of wheat - Yeah on the shiny sea
Sunshine and God's rays will help me cope.
And even in the shortness of that winter day
There's still a brief reminder that the sun will never frown
Just makes it far more precious still in every way
There's hope on the horizon - If you can keep your eyes on
Times ahead not far.
From the early morning to the shiny moon
Daybreak and daylight give peace and hope
On the waves of wheat - Yeah on the shiny sea
Sunshine and God's rays will help you cope.
9. Humpty Dumpty Built A Wall
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
Composer's Note: Despite the reference to Humpty Dumpty here, this is not a children's song. Rather, it uses a play on the words of children's nursery rhymes to reflect on the serious nature of malformed personalities due to childhood trauma.
Humpty Dumpty had a fall so Humpty Dumpty built a wall
All the horses and the men would never hurt poor Dumpty again.
Mary had to build a dam now Mary's quiet as a lamb
And everywhere her thoughts will go they're stained as scarlet on the snow.
Skip high - skip low - Where did your youth go?
Now high or low - try not let the glue show through.
Life turned out hard for Bo-Peep When she lost more than her sheep
All she wanted was a home but always ends up on her own.
Little girls and little boys should be here to play with toys
But No more sugar - no more spice - 'cause someone's taken all things nice.
Skip high - skip low - Where did your youth go?
Now high or low - try not let the blues show through.
Humpty Dumpty had a fall so Humpty Dumpty built a wall
All the horses and the men would never hurt poor Dumpty again.
Humpty Dumpty had a fall so Humpty Dumpty built a wall (repeat)

10. Learning To Love
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
Composer's Note: You might imagine that such a powerful thing as love would be something we know instinctively from birth. Sadly that's not the case. And in some ways, from an early age, we are 'led up the garden path' by the media that it should be easy. Even romantic love can often be portrayed in song or film as something that happens quite naturally and seems effortless. When you consider the Bible's description of love, it can be dauntingly obvious just how much there is to learn. For most people growing up in today's unloving world, it can even be a battle to overcome the first hurdle - to love oneself, and then others. And it can also be a challenge to love when there is no love returned. It's true; love never fails.
Still talking with an open heart - open like the sunshine -beaming out in rays
Still walking on the narrow road - but with a lighter load - I'm hoping for some new days
And I'm free now - 'cause I'm learning to love you without pain - for no gain.
I can be me now - learning to love - love me, love you, love life.
Still praying for you night and day - sending out an angel where I cannot go.
Still hoping somewhere down the line your heart will start to shine - I'm hoping for a rainbow.
But I'm free now 'cause I'm learning to give for giving sake - not to take
I can believe now - learning to love - love me, love you, love life.
I still can't abandon my heart's strong conviction - laid solid when I fell into your eyes
I felt your love when through my lonely heart's eviction -
You took me in and painted rainbows in my skies.
And I'm free now - 'cause I'm learning to love you without pain - for no gain.
I can be me now - learning to love - love me, love you, love life.
Still want to be a better man - praying for the wisdom - I swallow down my cup
Still want to be the very best - what should I lay to rest -what should I try to wake up.
But I'm free now - learning that love endures - it's for sure.
I can believe now - 'cause love never fails - love me, love you , love life.
I still can't abandon my heart's strong conviction - laid solid when I fell into your eyes
I felt your love when through my lonely heart's eviction -
You took me in and painted rainbows in my skies.
And I'm free now - learning to love you without pain - for no gain.
I can believe now - learning to love - love me, love you, love life
11. Needs Must
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
As I need my food for hunger, and my drink to quench my thirst,
the air I breathe, my songs to sing, I need your love the worst.
As I need my sleep to slumber, to rest and work and play,
I need (but with a passion) to be by your side each day.
What good is it for me to see, hear, touch, taste and smell,
without your face, voice, hand and lips, and scent I know so well?
As I need my dreams to wonder, to soar up as a dove,
to save my soul when I'm falling fast, I hold on to your love.
As the lightning comes with thunder, and the dawn awakes with dew,
So deep within, you're part of me. I was surely born for you.
What good is it for me to see, hear, touch, taste and smell,
without your face, voice, hand and lips, and scent I know so well?
What good is it for me to see, hear, touch, taste and smell,
without your face, voice, hand and lips, and scent I know so well?
So come softly sweet and warm my love. Let me feel your smiling face.
I need your tender words, your laugh, your love and warm embrace.
I need your tender words, your laugh, your love and warm embrace.
12. Wait And Listen
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
I was walking along the sidewalk when I heard a mournful cry
But I still decided to walk on by
I was tempted into turning - couldn't quite determine why
I could feel the hesitation - should I ..
Wait and listen? - turn and see?
Wait and listen? - Who could it be?
I could barely make the words out -
"No you mustn't go that way (you mustn't go that way)
- you must face the right direction today "
Wait and listen - turn and see
Wait and listen - You could be free"
So I turned but for a moment just to give the creature peace
Now my countenance grew paler and I went weak at the knees!
'Cause it turned out - that I was facing myself!
Yes it turned out it was me!
Now it turned out - I had been facing death! (you were facing death)
Now it turns out - now I'm free! (now you're free)
So while you walk along the sidewalk, should you hear a mournful cry
Don't you hesitate to listen or you'll die
Don't you hesitate to listen or you'll die
(If you don't listen you'll die)
13. Safe And Warm
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
Safe and warm - when you calm my storm
If your heart could see - If you choose to be with me.
I will be safe and calm - embraced in your arms
On the far side of your fear I'm still waiting here - be mine.
Alone again and thinking of you. Once again I'm thinking for you
Wish you loved me - if you loved me
I would feel safe and warm - when you calm my storm
If your heart could see - If you choose to be with me.
I will be safe and calm - embraced in your arms
On the far side of your fear I'm still waiting here - be mine.
Gaze into the stars above you - count them - that's how much I love you
Don't be afraid - love's how we're made
Please hold me safe and warm with you.
14. You See Nothing
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
Mister - when you look into her eyes - can you see past all the lines
If you don't you see nothing - no you see nothing - nothing at all
And hey sister - there's no way to read my mind
There's a lot more me inside
And this shell is just nothing - no simply nothing - nothing at all.
There she goes over there with those looks - golden hair
All the men want to be by her side
But there's more to that book - open up take a look.
There's a beautiful person inside.
Hey - Mister - when you look into her eyes - can you see past all the lines
If you don't you see nothing - no you see nothing - nothing at all
And hey sister - there's no way to read my mind
There's a lot more me inside
And this shell is just nothing - no simply nothing - nothing at all.
(You should look ___ ) You should look for truth in her heart
(Beauty hides ___) You should search for beauty that hides
(Take the time ___) Take the time, discover her soul
All the rest fades away with time.
Hey - Mister - when you look into her eyes - can you see past all the lines
If you don't you see nothing - no you see nothing - nothing at all
'til you open the book and then you take a look you see nothing - nothing at all
(repeat and fade)
15. Keep Looking Up
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
Composer's Note: After enjoying a circus performance and thinking back on the trapeze and high wire walker - it occurred to me that in life we don't have the advantage of a safety net - we only get one chance and we have to just give it our best shot. But if we don't take any chances be it in relationships or whatever, we may find ourselves hiding from life. Life is not a spectator sport (Despite what TV programs like Big Brother might like you to think). We have to make serious choices and often with serious consequences if we get it wrong. Speaking as someone who has slipped more times than stayed up, I can only say the best we can do is keep looking (up) to our creator for guidance as we go.
Flying high and swinging fast - lots of room to slip
Hope he catches with a grasp - on the second flip.
For what's worth the most in the real world the best you're gonna get
Is just one chance to get it right there is no safety net ..
And it's a long way down - it's a long way down -
It's a long way down if you mess it up.
It's a long way down - It's a long way down
It's a long way down - so keep lookin' up.
It may be alright on the night - or maybe with mistakes
finally he gets it right after twenty takes
For what's worth the most in the real world the best you're gonna do
is get it right the first time round there is no second queue.
Just a long way down - it's a long way down -
It's a long way down - so keep lookin' up.
Some would like to wait back stage away from all the strife
But while they're hiding in their cage are missing out on life
But what's worth the most is living life and the only real regret
is a 'no risk life' which is no life and before you know you're set ..
For a long lay down - for a long lay down
For a long lay down and no getting up.
It's a long way down - It's a long way down
It's a long way down - so keep lookin' up.
Keep lookin' up (3)
16. Tuck Me In (Lullaby For Grown-Ups)
Words and Music By Brendan Vincent Owens • www.BVOwens.co.uk
Composer's Note: This song embraces the thought from Ecclesiastes, that "two are better than one". At some time or other any of us can feel overwhelmed or just too tired to face today's trials. At such a time a partner who, not just understands us and makes allowances but comforts and protects us is an invaluable friend. We are grateful of their help and know we will do the same for them when they need us.
Tuck me in nice 'n' warm keep me safe and cosy. I don't feel so good today.
Tuck me in 'round my back - right down to my toeseys
I don't want to work and don't want to play
Close the door - get the light -
and then pull the curtain and sit down by my side
Today I want to hide -while you stand guard and make the world go away.
Tuck me hold me close and then rock me slowly until I'm sound asleep
Tuck me in sing a song - sing it soft and low -
with your kind gentle voice I'll go under deep
There were times when my courage could move a mountain
Today it up-n-died - and now I need to hide
While you stand guard and chase the world away ..
(instrumental)
There were times when my courage could move a mountain
Today it up-n-died - and now I need to hide
While you stand guard and chase the world away
Tomorrow maybe I will have the strength - but don't make me face the world today.
Mmmmmm and I won't forget your kindness - No I won't forget you came
When your weak then you will find this -
I will be there - I will tuck you in - I will love you just the same.
(Mmmmm that's nice and cosy)
